(This lesson will take more than one 30 minute class time to teach,
and this lesson is adjusted according to the student's age.)
TODAY WE WILL BE LEARNING
ABOUT THE LETTER "D"
In American Sign Language,
the letter "D" looks like this.
Show me the letter "D" on one hand
IN MUSIC,
THE NOTE BELOW
ON THE "STAFF"
AFTER THE
TREBLE CLEF
IS THE MUSIC LETTER "D"
DOES THIS LETTER "D"
LAND ON A SPACE NOTE
OR A LINE NOTE?
DRUM
This is a snare DRUM
like "Snary" the blue Meloditty
snare DRUM in Taratabong land
You play the snare DRUM with drum sticks.
the word BASS sounds like "BASE"
The Meloditty bass DRUM is the
big pink momma "Drumba" DRUM in Taratabong land
You play the bass (base) DRUM with padded sticks.
Below is the episode introducing the
Meloditties in Taratabong,
Meloditties in Taratabong,
including the blue "snary" snare DRUM and
the pink momma "Drumba" bass (base) DRUM
This is a hand DRUM that you play with your hands
We also call this kind of DRUM a bongo DRUM
In this episode about the Meloditties in Taratabong land,
they introduce the bongo hand DRUMs.
Just for fun, let us now watch
a video of a DRUM competition
with girls against the boys
playing snare DRUMs and bass(base) DRUMs.
(I normally do not show the whole video of the competition in class, due to time. However, I do like to skim through the video, as I watch the reactions of the students. If they really want to see it all, they will let you know.)
For those of you who do not have a snare DRUM
we can use buckets for a DRUM.
The next video is of some young men playing on some
bucket DRUMS.
Yes, a bucket DRUM is just using a
bucket like a DRUM.
In order to be able to play the drums,
we need to practice.
Let us now practice on our laps,
if a bucket is not available,
if a bucket is not available,
To the "We Will Rock You" song
Now let us see if you can practice the rhythm
of hitting the beat on a DRUM, bucket, or lap.
But, before we practice the rhythm,
can you tell me what RHYTHM means?
RHYTHM means:
a strong repeated pattern of sound
or movement.
Just like the sound of playing drums.
Okay, now let us practice RHYTHM
playing some different kinds of RHYTHM.
Now, let us have fun learning how to play the snare drum.
Below is a video onhow to play the snare DRUM
I threw in this next video to remind me to do a
drum circle call and response in class, according to grade level.

Next, we will be learning about
the music letter "E"
REVIEW TIME:
Remember there are only 7 letters in the Music Alphabet,
and those letters are:
A, B, C, D, E, F, G
There are no letters after G.
In other words, there is no H, I, J, K, L, M...and so on.
Now hold up one hand
The number of lines in music is
how many fingers you have on one hand.
Count the fingers on one hand.
How many fingers did you count?
The number of spaces in music is
how many spaces there are in between the fingers.
Now count the spaces between your fingers.
How many spaces are in between the fingers?
So...
How many lines are there in music?
How many spaces are there in music?
Did you know that the lines and spaces
you see in music are called the "STAFF"?
To understand the letter names
to the notes on the spaces
after the Treble Clef on the Staff:
Just remember " D" "FACE" is on
a SPACE
D is on the space below the
F on the bottom 1st space between 2 lines
a SPACE
D is on the space below the
F on the bottom 1st space between 2 lines
F in FACE is on the bottom 1st space (between the lines)
A in FACE is on the 2nd space
C in FACE is on the 3rd space
E in FACE is on the 4th space
Instead of saying "The" space, you will say "D" space
Because the letter "D" lands on a space before the "F".
What space is the letter "D" on?
I would say the "D" is on the
space below the 1st space between 2 lines.
Below on the staff, after the treble clef
is the D major scale "OCTAVE"
because it starts on the letter "D"
and ends on the letter "D"
In the D Major scale, there are 2 SHARPs:
F sharp and C sharp
A SHARP is a music symbol and
it looks like this.
Whenever you see a SHARP in music
you will go up one step, or
you will play the very next note going up.
What is the difference between a
SHARP and a FLAT?
SHARP and a FLAT?
SHARPS always go up,
and FLATS always go down.
We will review flats in another lesson.Whenever you have 8 notes
starting from one note, like the letter "D"
and then ending on the letter "D"
you will have an "OCTAVE"
How many letters are there in an
"OCTAVE"?
How many letters are there in music?
